Chapter Fourteen

Colton

Cassidy is acting a little strange. I watch her, noting how she has refused to meet my eyes. I wonder if there's anything I have done or said.

Is this about the money? Did she not want to be compensated for helping? Was she feeling forced?

I make a mental note to talk to Natalia and ask about how the conversation they'd had this morning went.

"So, how long is this going to last? I ask because this could drag on forever, and it would be weird to be Colton's fake girlfriend for longer than six months,” Cassidy says.

"We are hoping that this all blows over in two months. We plan to sue Vivienne for everything she has. We just aren't done gathering facts," says William.

Cassidy gives a nod, seemingly pleased by the plan.

"So, this shouldn't take longer than six months?" Cassidy questions, still avoiding my eyes.

"Yes," Natalia answers.

"Good," she mutters.

And then, like the first time in the garden, Natalia works through everything with Cassidy, and I watch her sign the papers.

“We did say we wouldn’t take up too much of your time,” Natalia says, beginning to pack up.

Cassidy looks between Natalia and William.

"So, that's it?” she asks.

"Of course," William says as he too begins to pack up. "This is the part where you iron out with Colton how you want the entire arrangement to work. You should be seen out with him at least two or three times a month to keep up appearances. We can't decide those days for you. It has to be between you and Colton."

"All right. I guess I'm doing this again," Cassidy says, and I am tempted to take her hand in mine, but fearful that she would shrug me off, I don't.

Natalia and William wave goodbye and make their way out the door. I turn toward Cassidy, who is still not meeting my eyes.

"You don't seem quite okay with the arrangement," I begin to say.

"I wouldn't agree to it if I wasn't," she snaps. "I am more than okay with being your fake girlfriend."

She gets up, and I get up with her, following her toward the door.

"Are we fighting?" I ask, getting to the door before she does and blocking her path so that her chest almost collides with mine, an action that causes her breath to hitch loud enough for me to hear.

She looks up at me and glares.

"You seem to be having a problem with me," I say.

"I don't think I have a problem with you," she growls, and I chuckle. That little growl more than seals it.

"Tell me what the problem is. Do you feel coerced into this?"

"I told you. You can't coerce me into doing anything I don't want to. I am well aware of what I have gotten myself into."

"Then why are you mad?"

"Who said I'm mad?"

"Cassidy," I growl. I can feel irritation slipping into my tone.

"Couldn't you just ask me to be your fake girlfriend yourself? Invite me over to your house. Why must you have someone do that for you? Is that really how this works?"

My eyes widen.
